How we got there ...

Joe Lor
For some, it might seem to be a long way to drive for a cultural
learning adventure.
But every kilometer from Ottawa to James Bay on the paved road from Ottawa to James
Bay is a visual treat and part of that cultural experience. When we arrived at Chisasibi to learn a little about Cree culture,
we were greeted by perhaps the friendliest and most humorous people we have ever known.
It's simple to get to Chisasibi. The northern most paved highway (109) in Eastern Canada
leads directly from Montreal or Ottawa right to the James Bay region and straight to the
heart of Chisasibi.
When we inquired about coming to Chisasibi, we were assisted by a representative of the
Mandow Agency who helped us plan our stay. Our choices were to stay in the modern motel or
we could have experienced more traditional accommodations. We chose the motel.
We also chose to take a 10 hour day freighter canoe trip on James Bay and eat a
traditional Cree meal on one of the islands there. This gave us an opportunity to
take pictures of the islands and wildlife, ask questions about Cree culture, and see the
stark James Bay geography carved out by the Ice Ages of the past.
Our trip to the James Bay was an unforgettable cultural experience. One of the
hallmarks of my travel experience.
Here is my day diary of our trip and images from our cultural experience.
